The Range

She Was Just a Little Off Today.

Sunday morning at the farm means Nonna’s marinara on the stove, a table that sags under the weight of Sunday supper, and a shooting range lesson with a former Special Forces soldier named Sal.

Jason grew up on a farm. He knows how to shoot.

A shotgun, Rami points out. Not a pistol.

He has a point.

Chapter 12 of Hold Fast is the morning after — cocktails in the lodge, a conversation that takes a turn Jason didn’t see coming, and a Sunday that somehow ends with Jason realizing just how much he still doesn’t know about the world he’s walked into.

And then there’s Nonna.

What she does at the shooting range — on her way back from the garden, basket of vegetables on her arm, completely unprompted — is the most quietly terrifying thing Jason has witnessed since meeting Rami Moretti.

Sal’s explanation doesn’t help.
